mango: demand from the United States, Japan and new markets boosts mango exports

The resumption of orders from the United States and Japan, new markets such as Argentina and at least 50% higher realization per unit helped to revive mango exports from India. Fresh fruit exports to Japan have doubled to 50 tons in the current season from 24.52 tons exported in 2021-21, while around 1,000 tons of mangoes were exported to the United States .

Similarly, mangoes are being sent to South Korea after a two-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and Malaysia has ensured imports of Alphonso, Kesar and Banganpalli mango varieties, officials said.

“There is a 10-15% increase in mango exports this season compared to last. Exports have recovered,” an official said.

India exported fresh mangoes worth $44.07 million in FY22 compared to $56.11 million in 2019-20 as the United States halted mango imports due to physical inspections during the pandemic period.

Mangoes destined for the United States must be irradiated before being exported.

“This year also marked a breakthrough in penetrating the Japanese market. Mangoes are also sent to Korea and it is expected that few containers as a test market will be available there,” the official said.


The Agricultural and Processed Food Export Development Authority promoted Langda and Zardalu IG in Bahrain and organic mangoes in Russia this year. The king of fruits is also promoted in Riyadh, Brussels, Thimpu, Kuwait, Dubai, Denmark and Berlin.

Sources said Malaysia has secured imports of Alphonso, Kesar and Banganpalli mango varieties.

Market access has also been achieved in Argentina,” the official said.

In April-June 2021, exports of fresh fruits and vegetables, including mangoes, amounted to $642 million and increased to $697 million in the corresponding months of the current fiscal year.
